Statement from Scott & Taun Hall, parents of Miles Hall, regarding decision to settle lawsuit against the City of Walnut Creek
"After a very difficult 15 months since our son Miles was shot and killed by police officers during a mental health crisis, we chose to settle our Federal Civil Rights lawsuit against the city of Walnut Creek.
Our decision to settle was based on attempting to move forward and to avoid a prolonged legal battle that would have taken a further toll on us, our family, and our friends. The lawsuit was never about money. No amount of money can bring our son back or heal the wounds we will live with for the remainder of our lives. Our goal has always been, and will continue to be, for the city of Walnut Creek and its police department to recognize the fact that our son needed help that awful day. Instead of getting help, he was viewed as a criminal, and was killed as he tried to run home. We will continue our fight to create the changes needed to the systems that failed Miles and our family. We are committed to ensuring that no other family will experience the loss of a loved one at the hands of the police when a call is made for help and care. We will continue to push to create a 24/7 non-police response for people seeking help during a mental health crisis. There are no winners, nor was there ever going to be true justice for Miles as a result of this lawsuit. However, we will claim victory once we are assured that those in a mental health crisis are not harmed or killed at the hands of the police.
We have created the Miles Hall Foundation to help achieve these goals and to create lasting positive change in our son’s name."
